Dr Olive Shisana, ISSC President, opened the 29th General Assembly of the International Social Science Council. The General Assembly serves as the ISSC’s main governing structure, which comprises the Council’s membership. Meeting every three years serves as an occasion to review the Council’s activities and determine the general direction of its future work.
Dr Shisana, elected in 2010, welcomed new and old faces alike — new members such as the Arab Council for the Social Sciences, National Research Foundation in South Africa, the International Society for Ecological Economics, the International Arctic Social Sciences Association, the Academy of Social Sciences in the United Kingdom, the Association for Politics and the Life Sciences, the Science Council of Asia, the Societe de Legislation Comparee/Society of comparative legislation, and the World Council of Anthropological Associations.
The General Assembly brings together the member bodies of the social sciences to engage, interact, and exchange ideas for a mutually benificial way forward — to strengthen the social sciences globally.
