Future Earth is an international research initiative that will develop knowledge for responding effectively to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and for supporting transformation towards global sustainability in the coming decades. Future Earth mobilizes thousands of scientists while strengthening partnerships with policy-makers and other stakeholders to provide sustainability options and solutions in the wake of Rio+20.
Future Earth was developed as a flagship initiative of the Science and Technology Alliance for Global Sustainability, or “the Alliance” as it is known, an informal international partnership that is committed to making full use of science and technology to inform equitable, sustainable solutions to the most pressing issues currently confronting humankind. It envisions a sustainable world where decision-making is informed by the best available scientific evidence and knowledge.
Future Earth was established by the Science and Technology Alliance for Global Sustainability. As an establishing member of #FutureEarth, the ISSC’s role was to lead the initial design phase, and was a member of the Implementation Management Project board, responsible for planning and supervising the implementation of a fully operational Future Earth by mid-2014.
The ISSC aims to bring the voices of the social sciences to the Future Earth research framework.
