World Social Science Fellows Programme

Becoming Involved

Early career scientists who want to apply to become World Social Science (WSS) Fellows can find more information here.

The ISSC warmly encourages its members and other organisations to become involved in the work of the World Social Science Fellows programme. Interested organisations can join as:

Host of a World Social Science Seminar

World Social Science Seminars will be organised in collaboration with local hosts, who provide a venue and facilitate practical local arrangements. Hosting a social science seminar gives an organisation the chance to contribute to bringing social science to bear on some of the most pressing global challenges of our time. It will bring an exciting group of excellent scientists to the venue, and provides an opportunity for their interaction with local scientists, students, policy makers and practitioners, community activists and others. Through active involvement in the selection of the topic and senior scientists involved (convenors and “social science leaders”), the host institution will also be able to profile its interests or activities. Hosting a seminar preferably (but not necessarily) involves (partial) funding of the seminar.

Sponsor of a World Social Science Seminar

The running of the WSS Fellows programme is funded by a four-year grant from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), but seminars are funded on a case-by-case basis. Seminar sponsors are therefore essential to the success of the programme. Sponsoring a World Social Science Seminar means (partially) funding it and can also mean active involvement in selection of the seminar’s topic and of the senior scientists involved. Sponsorship of a seminar contributes to the building of capacities for social science research. Because different seminars may be supported by different organisations, the programme offers sponsors the opportunity to partner with each other in backing a truly international initiative. It will also give sponsors the chance to profile their own work and/or people and gives them access to an interesting group of scientists, policy makers and practitioners and others.

Do not hesitate to contact the ISSC if your organisation wants to take on one of the roles described, or to be involved in another way. Laura van Veenendaal, World Social Science Fellows programme manager, will be happy to discuss options with you. She can be contacted at ISSC.Fellows@gmail.com or by phone on +33 1 456 848 59.
